Martín Santiváñez Vivanco, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies of the Maiestas Foundation, discusses the recent clash between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela over the death of FARC guerrilla leader Raúl Reyes. in an article published by the newspaper Diario de Navarra
Santiváñez Vivanco maintains that “if Chávez wants to be like Bolívar, he has chosen the wrong route. Bolívar loved Colombia, he wanted it to be a great country. He dreamed of a nation that would lead the continent in freedom and development. He believed in a different future, in which our peoples would walk together along the paths of progress and peace. To threaten Colombia and defend its enemies is not a style of behavior that is worthy of Bolívar's heirs. Bolívar is a monumental figure, a man who gave so much to our continent. He would not have been able to look on as nations that should be brothers stab each other in the back, when in his own lifetime, he was unable to tolerate such an attitude.
