Alejandro Guzmán Brito publishes the book "The Life and Work of Andrés Bello: his Development as a Jurista”

Profesor Alejandro Guzmán Brito

This book belongs to The Global Law Collection by Thomson Aranzadi Publishers. It offers a biography of the famous Latin American humanist born in Caracas.

This volume offers a biography of the illustrious Latin American humanist Andrés Bello, who was born in Caracas in 1781, lived for almost twenty years in London from 1810 onwards, and finally settled in Chile in 1829, where he was extraordinarily active in many fields of intellectual enquiry until his death in 1865. Outstanding among his achievements are his Grammar of the Spanish Language, regarded as authoritative even today; his Principles of International Law, which laid the foundations for this discipline in Spanish America and which was a standard reference work in the chanceries of countries in this region for almost a hundred years; and the Civil Code of Chile, a landmark among the law codes of its day, which has now been in force for 150 years and has been adopted and adapted by many other states on the continent. This study examines the life work of this leading scholar, paying special attention to his career as a jurist.
